Children's literature is an important resource to improve socio-emotional development in Early Childhood Education, especially when the storytelling is mediated by the teacher's educationalsocial skills (ESS). Knowledge of the history and specific orientation are assumed conditions for the performance of these skills. This study evaluated an early childhood teacher's ESSfor storytelling under the following conditions: with/without prompt sheets; with/without prior access to the book and/or the archive; keep/change the bookfrom one class to another; with/without prior orientation in ESS. The teacher's performance was videotaped and analyzed by judges, in terms of the occurrence and frequency of ESStypical of this activity. The results indicated higher frequency and variability of ESSwhen the form was adopted, with some ESSoccurring only in this condition. The adoption of support and guidance programs for teachers are proposed, raising research questions on this topic (AU).

This paper discusses the phenomenon of leisure in contemporary times and the urgency of adopting other paradigms to analyze its manifestations. It presents a research carried out with children from kindergarten in museums in order to educate for other sensibilities. The study aimed to analyze the narratives made by 5-year-old children about the situation of the black people in our society, powered by visits to two museums in the city of Belo Horizonte. Thereby, the articulation of the concepts of childhood, curriculum, education and museum language allowed analyses that moved towards an ethno-racial education for these children. The qualitative research adopted the case study and document analysis strategies, interviews, participant observation. Thus, we see a positive reading about black people by the children and the constitution of other imaginaries made possible by playful practices outside the school context.

RESUMO

Despite the fact that Charles Darwin spent several months in Australia in the final year of his Beagle voyage that circumnavigated the globe, most studies that deal with Darwin's life or his discovery of evolution spend little time discussing his Australian period, if it is mentioned at all. His time there is largely deemed to have produced little of significance in comparison to his visits to other places such as the Galápagos Islands, which has long been mythologized as providing the key sources of observable data that ultimately led Darwin to develop his evolutionary speculations. In recent years, however, Darwin's period in Australia has received more attention, most notably a series of studies detailing the observations and connections Darwin made while in New South Wales, Tasmania, and King George Sound. While much of this literature has provided an important corrective to previous Darwin scholarship that had largely ignored Darwin's period in Australia, it has also worked to perpetuate a romantic and heroic view of scientific discovery by suggesting that Darwin's key "evolutionary revelation" was made not in the Galápagos Islands but in the Blue Mountains, a claim that has been recently made in print and online. This paper therefore examines the historical literature on Darwin Down Under, focussing in particular on this recent romantic turn that seeks to situate Australia as the key site of inspiration for Darwin's theory of evolution.

OBJECTIVE: To write the biographical profile of one of the main female founders and most representative figures in Occupational Therapy in Chile: Brígida Flores. METHOD: From an interpretive paradigm, through the biographical approach and incorporating elements of grounded theory, the rescue of oral history is carried out through in-depth semi-structured interviews with close people who had a relationship with Brígida Flores. Published and unpublished academic texts, audiovisual material, among other documents are also analysed. RESULTS: A codification of the information is carried out by means of chronological intervals, generating the construction of a biographical profile based on the saturation of the information. Along with it, contextual elements from the time when Brígida Flores was an occupational therapist and academic are incorporated. Thus, different moments in its history are identified. CONCLUSIONS: Brígida Flores stands out as one of the most relevant and influential women in the early stages of occupational therapy in Chile. Her history has transcended different generations and places in the country. Her teachings are part of the professional identity of many occupational therapists in Chile

RESUMO

Humans seem to have an adaptive predisposition for inventing, telling and consuming stories1. Prehistoric cave art provides the most direct insight that we have into the earliest storytelling2-5, in the form of narrative compositions or 'scenes'2,5 that feature clear figurative depictions of sets of figures in spatial proximity to each other, and from which one can infer actions taking place among the figures5. The Upper Palaeolithic cave art of Europe hosts the oldest previously known images of humans and animals interacting in recognizable scenes2,5, and of therianthropes6,7-abstract beings that combine qualities of both people and animals, and which arguably communicated narrative fiction of some kind (folklore, religious myths, spiritual beliefs and so on). In this record of creative expression (spanning from about 40 thousand years ago (ka) until the beginning of the Holocene epoch at around 10 ka), scenes in cave art are generally rare and chronologically late (dating to about 21-14 ka)7, and clear representations of therianthropes are uncommon6-the oldest such image is a carved figurine from Germany of a human with a feline head (dated to about 40-39 ka)8. Here we describe an elaborate rock art panel from the limestone cave of Leang Bulu' Sipong 4 (Sulawesi, Indonesia) that portrays several figures that appear to represent therianthropes hunting wild pigs and dwarf bovids; this painting has been dated to at least 43.9 ka on the basis of uranium-series analysis of overlying speleothems. This hunting scene is-to our knowledge-currently the oldest pictorial record of storytelling and the earliest figurative artwork in the world.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Medical records manufacture a representational model of a person. Yet, little has been done to analyze the historical construction of patient charts, the deliberations in the process of their creation, and how early patient charts displaced patients' narratives. OBJECTIVES: To retrospectively study the structure and production of old patient charts. METHODS: Anchored by the Archives of Ontario's medical records from three 19th century psychiatric asylums-Hamilton, London, and Kingston, Canada-the paper tools are reproduced on the basis of their original manufacturing processes using cast-iron presses and relevant typesetting. This includes mirroring the process of assembly, recontextualizing the form's limitations as a function of its construction, making historical the diagnostic considerations relevant at the time, and noting the continuum of practical and operational choices that have stretched into current records. RESULTS: An explication of the advance of physicians' objective records and the decline of the subjective patient view is given from index-card inception through design, accreditation, standardization, forms, and quantity, to analysis replacing narration. CONCLUSION: Through this artistic work, medical paradigms become realized through paper borders. With ink, lead, and historical manufacturing, a world view is re-created. Such a marriage of medicine and art challenges the static interpretations of paper tools as only ends to the objectification of patients; instead, a tradition of reconfiguring the medical body as a thing dissolving into objectification becomes apparent. This trend continues now through the lack of narrative balancing a person's health care experience and his/her medical record.

RESUMO

This essay explores the regenerationist thought of Santiago Ramón y Cajal in his Vacation Stories (1905). Two stories of the collection, "The Accursed House" and "The Natural Man and The Artificial Man", can be read as an allegory of Spain at the end of the century nineteenth. In "The Accursed House", the indiano scientist Julián tries to convince Inés to adopt the same scientific perspective of the world that he has. Similarly, he sets out to regenerate his degenerated manor, to which he has given the suggestive nickname Villa Inés. The story serves as a model for the regeneration of Inés, who represents traditional Spaniards, and Villa Inés, which represents Spain. For its part, the story of Esperaindeo Carcabuey in "The Natural Man" offers a warning, as it tells of his failed life, which he links directly with his inferior education (impregnated as this was with metaphysics). Only by adopting Jaime's progressivism can Esperaindeo change the direction of his life. In both stories, Cajal links the reeducation of the characters with his more comprehensive interest in national regeneration. In view of the allegorical impulse of these stories, Vacation Stories constitutes a foundational myth on which Cajal constructs his vision of a modern Spain

RESUMO

Considering the changes in moral principles, human behavior and behavioral values through the ages, in Egill Skallagrimsson's Saga, Egill presents us with altered mental status. This is in terms of what at present is considered symptoms of an anti-social personality, and bipolar affective disorder. Egill Skallagrimsson is considered one of the most famous Vikings in the Icelandic Sagas. Archaeological findings mentioned in Egill's Saga indicate disfigurement of his skull, which has led many authors to suggest that Egill suffered from skeletal dysplasia. The primary assumption in the literature is that Egill Skallagrimsson was affected by Paget's disease of bone. This consideration is additionally based on the scholar's interpretation of the Saga text. The unique storytelling style in the Saga of Egill Skallagrimsson is evident; however, the question of the story's truthfulness remains open. In this article, we investigate Egill Skallagrimsson's assumed Paget's disease of bone, based on the physical and mental symptoms disclosed in the Saga of Egill Skallagrimsson. Associated with the assumption, the author's hermeneutics of Egill's Saga in the context of modern-day knowledge of Paget's disease of bone, brings forward the probability estimate to the range of permille. In Scandinavian folklore and mythology, a tale by Saxo Grammaticus of a notorious shield-maiden named Visna, reminds of Egill, as noted by Snorri Sturluson. Hence, in reference to Egill Skallagrimsson's mental status and physical appearance as listed in Egill's Saga, the authors recommend the name for his condition to be "Visna of Egill Skallagrimsson".

RESUMO

Matthew P. McAllister wrote: "Comic books can and have contributed positively to the discourse about AIDS: images that encourage true education, understanding and compassion can help cope with a biomedical condition which has more than a biomedical relevance" [1]. With this in mind, I combined a 23-narrator oral history and my personal memoir about an inpatient Chicago AIDS hospital unit in my book, Taking Turns: Stories from HIV/AIDS Care Unit 371. In doing so, I built upon the existing rich history of HIV/AIDS in comics, which this article will briefly describe. Although not a comprehensive review of the intersection of AIDS and comics, the book is a tour through influences that proved useful to me. In addition, in making my book, I faced a distinct ethical issue with regard to representing patient experiences with HIV/AIDS, and I describe here how I addressed it.

RESUMO

This paper examines Frances Burney's 1812 mastectomy letter alongside contemporaneous medical treatises on the subject of breast cancer. Burney's letter offers a critique of a medical community that misconstrues her experience and can be viewed as pathography, or disability memoir. Examining the letter and the treatises in this way illuminates the brutality of some medical practices and the frequent incongruity between the patients' and the physicians' understandings of pain. However, the letter and the treatises also share much in common; both at times emphasize the patient's words and experiences, and both reveal the impressive and contradictory range of ideas surrounding breast cancer in the long eighteenth century. The paper ends by suggesting that the complex rapport between the letter and the treatises holds particular interest for the field of disability studies in its confrontations with socio-medical tendencies to normalize the body and downplay the harsh realities of breast cancer.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT Through an example of structure analysis of the narrative of flow by one elite sportsman, this article attempts to shed some light on this debate in the context of understanding flow experiences as a narrative. A sportsman was invited to (a) think about flow moments; (b) describe these experiences in as much detail as possible; and (c) contextualize the experiences by delving into his life story. The recorded interviews of the participant were transcribed and subject to categorical-form and categorical-content analyses. The results show that: (a) the form and content of this participant's flow experiences were mediated by the narrative structure of his story and (b) the very story was what provided meaning to the participant's experiences of flow.

This essay examines constructions of deafness in medieval culture, exploring how deaf experience disrupts authoritative discourses in three textual genres: medical treatise, literary fiction, and autobiographical writing. Medical manuals often present deafness as a physical defect, yet they also suggest how social conditions for deaf people can be transformed in lieu of treatment protocols. Fictional narratives tend to associate deafness with sin or social stigma, but they can also imagine deaf experience with a remarkable degree of sympathy and nuance. Autobiographical writing by deaf authors most vividly challenges diagnostic models of disability, exploring generative forms of perception that deafness can foster. In tracing the disruptive force that deaf experience exerts on perceived notions of textual authority, this essay reveals how medieval culture critiqued the diagnostic power of medical practitioners. Deafness does not simply function as a symptom of an individual problem or a metaphor for a spiritual or social condition; rather, deafness is a transformative capacity affording new modes of knowing self and other.

School – where students spend considerable time and live intense relationships – is a scenario of possibilities for experience-building. This study aimed to identify and analyze episodes written by high school students about their experiences in Physical Education classes, in the format of teaching cases. The experiences narrated by the students raised questions to Physical Education teachers by mobilizing organic knowledge towards verbalized knowledge, thus establishing a pedagogy that effectively recognizes students’ experience as knowledge.
